Mike’s story

Vet opts for green mortgage to beat rising interest rates

When veterinary surgeon Mike decided it was time to move up the property ladder, energy efficiency performance was high on his must-have list. He found exactly what he was looking for in a new build house at Countryside’s Rivers Edge in Warrington – and was able to secure a green mortgage for additional financial peace of mind.

Recent research by the Home Builders Federation found that lower utility bills and running costs due to increased energy efficiency would encourage 53% of buyers to choose a new home. That was certainly the case for Mike.

A new home with character

After living in a city centre flat for 11 years, Mike intended to purchase a 1930s style Victorian home, but after comparing the energy efficiency with that of a new build, he had a change of heart.

Mike, who is now preparing to move into Countryside’s Rivers Edge development in Warrington, said: “I’m currently living in Manchester, where I own a flat and I’d started thinking about buying a house about three years ago but it was put on hold due to the pandemic.

“I was considering a 1930s style house but older houses are known for not being energy efficient. I looked at a few developments but when I found Rivers Edge, it was exactly what I was looking for in terms of affordability and location. The houses still have their own character and knowing how much I’ll be able to save on bills with a new build was a key selling point.”

A green house – and green mortgage

An impressive 85% of new build homes now have an A or B energy efficiency rating, versus just 4% of older homes. In fact, Countryside’s new build properties are 27% more energy efficient than the national average and 56% more energy efficient when compared to a Victorian property** due to the energy-saving features included as standard.

As well as the savings on utility bills, the energy efficiency performance of new builds means homebuyers can opt for green mortgages and enjoy preferential terms.

Mike added: “I hadn’t considered taking out a green mortgage, but when I found out how energy efficient Countryside homes are, it was recommended to me. With the increasing cost of living, I was worried about taking out a new mortgage and rising interest rates, but with a green mortgage I’ll be on a longer fixed rate which gives me greater peace of mind.”
