Our latest scheme Emperor’s Copse, is located on West Dean Road in West Tytherley, right on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border in the parish of Winterslow, mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086.
Our Sales Manager, Delia Edwards, was lucky enough to spend a morning recently with Michelle Scarrett, a parent governor at Winterslow CofE Primary School. Michelle relocated to Winterslow from London about three years ago and her children attend the primary school. We met Michelle and other locals at Truffles Coffee Shop, located in the village hall and gained a valuable insight into village life, which we’d like to share with you.
You will find a village that offers an extremely warm welcome and embodies a true sense of community. It ticks all the boxes for those of you seeking a more rural existence and yet a short car journey brings you to the likes of Stockbridge (15 mins) and Romsey (24 mins) as well as the magnificent cathedral city of Salisbury (29 mins). Hence, the regular bus services (87 and 88) from the village to Salisbury. For those of you who are London bound, both Salisbury and Grateley offer fast services into our capital city in under an hour and a half. Plus, you have easy motorway access to the M3 and a choice of either Southampton (39 mins) or Heathrow (1hr 37 mins) airport.
Your children are well served with pre-schools, primary schools and secondary schools; the latter all reached through regular bus services:
Pre-schools: Winterslow, Porton Down, Norman Court (Montessori), Farley (Outdoor) and Pitton
Primary Schools: Winterlsow CofE and West Tytherley CofE and Pitton
Secondary Schools: Salisbury – St Edmund’s, St Joseph’s and Wyvern College
Stockbridge – Test Valley
Romsey – The Romsey School
Downton – Trafalgar
Grammar Schools: S Wilts and Bishop Wordsworth’s both in Salisbury
Independent Schools: Salisbury, Romsey and Winchester all have a variety to choose from, plus, there is Farleigh School towards Andover
There is always something going on in the village, making it easy for you to get involved and make friends. The village hall is the hub of the community and is home to the Truffles Coffee Shop and the pre-school as well as an abundance of other activities – something for everyone: sports – table tennis, tennis and badminton, movie nights, am dram, gardening and the list goes on.
It’s easy too to keep abreast of what’s happening in the parish with notice boards at both of the local shops, a parish magazine and website as well as a Facebook page:

Getting outdoors should never be a problem – Emperor’s Copse has the incredible Bentley Wood as its stunning backdrop and The Plantation too has some beautiful woodland walks – to name but two. In fact, the familiar green acorn signs indicating a public footpath are dotted all over the parish. Those of you who are keen cyclists will be pleased to hear that the 25 mile Clarendon Way cycle path cuts through the heart of the village. There is a children’s playground opposite the school, which has a skate park too and Barry’s Field Sports Ground runs a number of events including a Friday night youth zone and football coaching on a Saturday.
What do I do if I need a pint of milk or a loaf of bread I hear you say? Well, you have two village shops to choose from: Winterslow and West Tytherley, both with a Post Office to boot! With Salisbury less than a 30 minute drive away you are in easy reach of several major supermarkets, including a Waitrose, for your weekly food shop. Plus, the City has a bi weekly market and a farmer’s market twice a month.
If you’re a keen shopper, as we’ve said previously, West Tytherley is so well placed making shopping at : Stockbridge, Romsey, Salisbury, Winchester and Southampton a doddle, each offering an abundance of your High Street favourites and independent boutiques.
Foodies amongst you need not be disappointed either as all of these towns and cities has a huge variety of cafes, bars, bistros and restaurants to satisfy any palette. But if you want to stay closer to home, the Lord Nelson is the village pub and offers food and a take out service. There’s the Black Horse in West Tytherley too and the Silver Plough in nearby Pitton. If it’s a wood fired pizza you’re craving then the Slinky Fox visits the village on alternate Wednesdays and good old fish and chips from Tony’s Frying Machine every other Thursday. There are Indian and Chinese restaurants who will deliver to your door too.
The warm, welcoming atmosphere we experienced in the parish is infectious. A truly active community that caters for all tastes.
