Netflix, wine and sanctuary

There will be millions of people across Great Britain who will relate to what we are about to share in this blog and it all starts in the kitchen.

When thinking about a kitchen, many people will immediately think of the practicality of the space and how it should serve its purpose as the place in which family meals are prepared.

Co-op Food published a survey in 2018 which stated that the average British dinner lasts 21 minutes, however, the preparation time of that meal takes around 1.5hrs. It is during that 1.5hrs that the magic takes place, which is why it is so important to have your kitchen styled to suit your enjoyment needs.

For many of our buyers, the kitchen represents a place of sanctuary where they unwind after a busy week. They open Netflix on their laptop and pour themselves a glass of the red (or white) they bought on their way home from work to enjoy as they cook up a storm for the brood.

When planning the look and feel of the kitchen you should think about where you would like your kitchen table to sit in proximity to the hob etc. You want to be able to move around the space with ease, but you also want to ensure that you can comfortably watch your favourite Netflix boxset, and keep an eye on the dinner at the same time.

You also should think about where your plug points will be in relation to that kitchen table because there’s nothing more annoying than getting the two-minute warning from the laptop that it’s about to die but your charge point is four feet from your comfortable viewing chair.

Similarly, when you’re in your groove preparing a meal, you want to have all your herbs and spices (the flavour of the meal) all within touching distance of the hob. Similarly, your crockery, cutlery, utensils, pots and pans all need to be in exactly the right place, so careful attention must be paid to the layout and depth of your storage spaces.

Whether you’re 5ft 2in or 6ft 1in, you need your kitchen surfaces to be at the right height for you. If you plan on staying in your home for foreseeable future, then you need the worktops to suit your stature. A chef in the home must be comfortable in his/her culinary environment and over-stretching or hunching to reach a work station is not what you need or want.

There’s an old saying that “the kitchen is the heart of the home”. This is because it’s a place where people congregate. But it’s also the soul of the home. It’s also a place to be alone and enjoy those simple pleasures in life. We are all different in many ways, yet similar in others. That Friday night ritual of coming home, putting on Netflix, pouring a glass of wine and cooking up a storm is shared by many.

For this reason, Barratt Homes works with its buyers, giving them an array of design options so that they can curate their own sanctuary. We know why kitchens are the favourite room in the house – that’s where all the good stuff happens.
