Buyers of new build houses are saving an average of £2,600 on their annual energy bills, a new report has revealed.

The Watt a Save report, published by the Home Builders Federation (HBF), finds last year’s new build purchasers are saving more than £500 million on annual energy bills.

The research into new build energy usage looks at Government Energy Performance Certificate data. It shows the average new home uses approximately 100 kWh per m2 per year compared with an average of 259kWh per m2 for older properties.

On top of helping homebuyers to save money on their energy bills, the data shows new build homes emit a third of the carbon of an older property. As a result, new homes are helping to reduce carbon emissions by over 500,000 tonnes.

The energy efficiency of new builds is partly due to compliance with up-to-date regulations, but it’s also the result of builders’ increasing commitment to the environment. Developers are increasingly using new technologies and methods to ensure efficiency from the outset.
