Paul’s story

My experience using a broker to secure my first mortgage

Support Officer Paul had been looking to get on the property ladder for over a year but was struggling to find a home that ticked all his boxes.

Eventually he found what he was looking for at Keepmoat’s Bertram Farm development in Shotts and began his homeownership journey as a first-time buyer.

Finding the perfect home

Paul had carried out a lot of research into the mortgage process before he began looking for a new build home. So, he had a clear idea of how much he could afford.

“I had my heart set on a property that I loved and was perfect for me but due to my complex circumstances, it was looking likely that I would have to settle for the smaller property,” he explained.

The Keepmoat team recommended Paul speak with mortgage brokers at  First Mortgage  to understand his options and guide him through the mortgage process.

The role of mortgage brokers

Paul had looked into the role of brokers and reviews as part of his research into the mortgage process, so he knew what to expect.

“Using the broker made me more confident due to that every detail was well discussed and I was assisted throughout.

“The process went as I thought it would – it was well detailed and quick.”

Finding the right product and experts

“Reagan and Lynne from First Mortgage used their expertise and knowledge of the markets and found me a solution so I could get what I wanted.

“I will now have that extra bedroom I can use as office space that I didn’t think I would be able to get.

I am so grateful at the solution being found and the speed of service. I now have my mortgage offer and patiently await a date to pick up my keys.

“My advice to other first-time buyers would be to definitely to choose wisely on which broker to go with.”

Supporting homebuying process

Mortgage brokers can offer valuable guidance through the home buying journey, explaining options and giving you access to exclusive offers not found on the market.

Some mortgage brokers are free to use. They get paid commission from lenders for arranging mortgages.

Others charge an arranging fee which could be an upfront cost or a percentage of the mortgage amount.

Choosing to use a broker is an individual decision. Understanding their role and reading online reviews can be useful in helping you to decide.
