2019 saw Tidying up with Marie Kondo take Netflix by storm, and now in 2020, homeowners have been re-evaluating the layout of their homes – even taking tips from the Japanese organising consultant’s herself.  Much like Marie Kondo, we’d like to inspire you with our own top tips for maximising your living space, whether you need a room to look bigger or you’re lacking storage opportunities in a smaller room – we’ve got you covered.

Mirror, mirror on the wall

When it comes to maximising space, using a mirror should absolutely be your first port of call as a large mirror will create the illusion of a bigger space. It’s all about angles too, so think about which part of the room you want to reflect.

Using a mirror that runs the length of a wall is also a great way to maximise your space.  Better yet, if storage is an issue, opt for floor to ceiling mirrored wardrobes to create continuity. Also, try adding more depth to a room by switching out a rectangular mirror for a round one. A round mirror is ideal for breaking up rectangular shapes creating a layered effect throughout your space.

Multi-tasking furniture

Opting for multi-purpose furniture is the perfect solution when working with smaller spaces. Sofas with built-in compartments make for great storage space, whether it’s for magazines, books, toys or spare throws.  The same thinking goes for coffee tables, a trunk suited to your own style is ideal, with more opportunity for storing your personal items.  A trunk could also be used in your guest bedroom, perfect for storing spare guest bedding and pillows.

Perhaps you have a unit that stores all your favourite vinyl, but need more seating in your living room?  Try sourcing a unit that’s sturdy enough to double as a bench and top it off with a selection of cosy throw cushions – in an instant, you’ve got more seats to entertain!

Nesting tables are also an amazing option for savvy decorators. When more tables are needed, you can simply slide them out and stack them again when you’re done.  With a whole host of design types on the market, you’re sure to find a nesting table for every interior theme.

Claiming back the floor space

Is your desk is taking up too much floor space in your home study or you feel you don’t have enough room for a work space?  The solution…a mounted wall desk – they take up less room and you can even opt for above shelving units it for the ultimate work from home spot.

When it comes to living room furniture, a media console is by far the main culprit for taking up unnecessary space.  Mounting your TV on the wall is an ideal alternative – say goodbye to bulky furniture and hello to more family living space.

And finally, in the kitchen, go smaller with the dining table or opt for a table that extends for occasions when you’re entertaining guests – the best of both worlds!
