Keen to support young people within the housebuilding sector and provide long-term career opportunities, Twyford-based premium developer, Millgate, offers a popular apprenticeship programme. One of Millgate’s three apprentices includes Genevieve Florance who is fulfilling her passion for interior design and working in the Specification team.
Speaking about how she became an apprentice, Genevieve comments: “I decided to attend the apprenticeship day with Millgate because my careers advisor mentioned that there would be an opportunity to work in design and this is what I have always wanted to do. I really enjoyed the day and when I was offered the apprenticeship role as part of the Specification team it was a dream come true.
Genevieve continues: “Almost immediately after finishing my A-Levels, I started my new job and I love it! I assist the team in designing presentation boards and elevations, which show what the interior specification of a new development will look like once implemented. We then present these to the company’s Board of Directors and they tell us what they do and don’t like. If they are happy with our plans the site team will bring them to life, if not, we go back to the drawing board. It is all very interesting!”
Genevieve is soon to start a year long, interior design course at the KLC Design School in Chelsea Harbour. The course is two days a week allowing Genevieve to put her training to the test while in the office the rest of the week.
Genevieve concludes: “KLC Design School offers a great opportunity to achieve the necessary qualifications in interior design, but also allows me to work part time with Millgate and gain invaluable experience. I’ve learnt so much since working for Millgate, work is far more hands on, and you learn how to produce the work to an exceptionally high standard.”
