A Derbyshire couple have described the exciting moment they picked up the keys to their brand-new home in Littleover.

The couple, Laura Mills (27) and Jay Flood (31), together with their cockapoo Ruby, have purchased a home at Miller Homes’ Highfields development after renting in Oakwood for over five years.

Laura, who works as a business services assistant, explained: “When we initially started renting in 2014, we made a promise to buy our own house within a year, but that didn’t go quite as planned.

“We started to focus on other aspects in our lives, so buying was quickly pushed to the back of our minds. It wasn’t until Jay’s family moved away from where we were living that we realised it was time to move. We both wanted more space than our two-bed rental offered, and I wanted to live closer to my family in Derby.

“One of our friends has recently bought their new home on the first phase of the Highfields development and couldn’t stop singing the praises of Miller Homes. With their recommendation, we decided to take a trip to the neighbourhood to see what was available.

“The development is across from my grandparents’ house, so I knew the area well. Alongside this we liked it because it was close to my family, had brilliant walks for Ruby, and was close to the A38, which would be great for work.

“When thinking about the type of home I’d one day own, I originally had the very dream-like vision of the houses you draw as a child, with a door in the middle and windows on either side, but the practical aspect of this didn’t match up with what we were looking for.

“Our sales representative, Serena, listened to everything we said during the walk around and recommended another home style instead. I am so glad we agreed to view it – it ticked all our boxes and more, allowing us to move in and immediately put our stamp on it.”

Laura and Jay chose the Pushkin style home because of its spacious three-bedrooms and lounge.

She added: “We were very nervous at the start, because it was our first time buying, but Serena took us under her wing and put us in touch with a mortgage advisor and recommend solicitors.

“The moment we picked up the keys didn’t seem real. The excitement of owning a home hit us immediately, and the Miller Homes team who greeted us on the day shared the feeling. We love everything about our home, especially the view from our living room and bedroom. Luckily, the house is at the edge of the neighbourhood, so we have a wonderful field and lots of wildlife to look out onto. It might sound a little strange, but my favourite thing about the house is having more than one bathroom. I never realised how much we needed this, but it means no more queuing, even when guests are staying. It’s brilliant!”

Highfields is now over 93% sold out, with the final 18 homes now released at this popular development. There is a selection of three, four- and five-bedroom homes remaining, available from £186,000.

Miller Homes has once again been awarded a five-star rating in the Home Builders Federation (HBF) National Home Builders Federation New Homes Customer Satisfaction Survey.
